I’m Andy, and I offer tailored editorial services to authors of literary and genre fiction to improve the storytelling, flow and mechanics of their writing.
How I can help
I offer two different services to help writers improve their novels: an Editorial Assessment service and a Line & Copyedit service.
Why hire me?
I have a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in English from Cambridge University, and have spent a lifetime devouring novels of all kinds. I’ve worked extensively as a professional culture critic, and have had many reviews and features published in national magazines and broadsheets. I’m a former Observer Young Film Critic of the Year, and have written a book on Asian Horror (Kamera, 2010). I have also scripted many historical documentaries for the BBC, as well as working as a Storyliner on ITV’s Emmerdale. I worked as a script consultant on the Andrew Scott film Cognition (2020).
I have completed a number of in-depth courses in professional copyediting through the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) and Liminal Pages.
A bit about me (and Crouch End!)
I grew up in West Yorkshire, studied in California and Cambridge, and later settled in Crouch End in North London. After many years working in television production – both in drama and historical documentaries – I returned to my first love, literature, and launched my editorial services.
Crouch End is a writer-friendly neighbourhood with strong artistic traditions, and embodies values of community, creativity and independence that have always been important to me. Stephen King wrote a supernatural short story inspired by the area, Eurythmics recorded Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) in a local studio, Laurel & Hardy once played the local music hall, and Simon Pegg set his Shaun of the Dead script here.
I thrive on good coffee and conversation, and rely on regular fixes of brilliant books, great movies, live music and racquet sports to keep me in my happy place.
